Restoring files from an old Backup Exec tapes.

I have several backup tapes that were used with Symantec Backup Exec four years ago.  Most likely Backup Exec 2010 was used.  I have four tapes that were used in December 2011.  I have loaded them in a DELL Auto Tape Drive.  I have inventoried the tapes and started the Catalog for one of the tapes and it fails because of a missing tape.  It does not tell me what it is looking for so I don't know which tape to insert into the drive and inventory.  Can I build a catalog off of just one tape?  How can I determine which tape it will need?
