Setting Up ADBO

Hi,

I'm in the process of setting up Advanced Disk-Based Backup Option and have a few questions.  The doco seems a bit vague to me.

Do I need to instal both VDS and VSS on the media server and the client? From what I've read I trhink I only need VSS if I want to perform offhost SAN based backups.  I'm not doing an synthetic backups.  This is only for a file server with SAN attached LUNS - no VMware or Hyper-V

I'm not sure what the doco is referring to when it states that the volumes need reside on disks that are shared betweeen the remote computer and the BE server.  By shared do they mean network shares or administrative shares (D$) or do they mean shared physicaly as in both accessible via FC connectivity?
