On Backup Exec 2010 R3 w/ Exchange 2007 I need help understanding a few configuration parameters and best practice for back-to-disk.
Here's what I configured:
- Create new folder called "B2D-Exchange" and configure a B2D folder to point to it, 4GB max file size, 100 max # of backup sets, 1 concurrent operation, low disk threshold of 5GB.
- New Media Set named "Allow Overwrite", 5 days overwrite protection and 5 days append period, no vault rule.
- Create new job policy with 2 jobs (full and incremental), I'm noting specific options that I modified from default:
"Full" job properties:
Device and Media - Device=B2D-Exchange
Device and Media - Media Set=Allow Overwrite
Device and Media - When this job begins=Overwrite media
General - Backup method=Full - Using archive bit (reset archive bit)
Advanced Open File - Use AOFO + Microsoft VSS + Automatic
Microsoft Exchange - Backup method=Full - Database & Logs (flush committed logs)
Microsoft Exchange - Use Backup Exec GRT
"Incremental" job properties:
Device and Media - Device=B2D-Exchange
Device and Media - Media Set=Allow Overwrite
Device and Media - When this job begins=Overwrite media
General - Backup method=Full - Using archive bit (reset archive bit)
Advanced Open File - Use AOFO + Microsoft VSS + Automatic
Microsoft Exchange - Backup method=Incremental - Logs (flush committed logs)
Microsoft Exchange - Use Backup Exec GRT
Objective:
- Full backup every Sunday and Thur at 6pm (takes about 12-15hr to complete)
- Incremental backup every 6 hours everyday (takes about 2-3hr to complete)
- Minimize the space needed but also to ensure there's always a full backup set on B2D volume ready for restore
- Duplicate to tape job would need to be setup after B2D is configured correctly
Problem:
- Not sure how the media set overwrite and append values should be to minimize space needed.
- Must ensure my full backup does is protected from being overwritten prematurely leaving me without a good backup set on disk.
Thanks for your time.
