Abstract:  Enhancement request for restoring from a non-primary backup copy residing on OST disk pool.

With the introduction of OST technology and ability to perform optimized-duplication of backups across sites, the creation of multiple backup copies for vaulting, DR purposes, or simply having a copy of a backup data else were for restoring purposes has become a lot easier than before.

Issue: Restoring from a non-primary backup copy is limited to command line bprestore interface that is applicable only to file system restores.   This makes restores cumbersome and difficult to perform by operations or end-users.  In addition, restores from non-primary copy is currently only available to DB2 and Oracle Netbackup agents.

Point Solutions:  The alternatives involve use global touch file on the Master to specify the copy number, or changing the primary copy to be a different backup copy (by default primary copy is the original backup).   Both of these approaches involve the NetBackup admin and may lead to other issues (e.g. using touch file may break other restores in the process).

Enhancement Request:

My orginization would like to request the enhancements below to the methodology and handling restores from non-primary copies.

  1. Ability to specify copy number to restore from the GUIs
  2. Ability to specify copy number to restore from for all Netbackup agents (today this is limited to Oracle, DB2)
  3. Ability to identify the location of the backup copy when restoring from OST disk pool (currently this is only available for Tape)
  4. Ability for end-users to easily identify the number of copies and location of their backups.

Thanks.
